Travel Restrictions in China and the Middle East

China and the Middle East have both been effected by the coronavirus outbreak, especially when it comes to travel. These timelines outline how restrictions have been placed on travel in both the United States and China and the Middle East.

To the United States Timeline

  • January 6-8 the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends Americans traveling to China take extra precautions.

  • January 16 the US begin screening all passengers arriving from Wuhan for the virus.

  • January 31 President Trump issues an executive order that blocks entry to the US from anyone who has been to China in the last 14 days other than US residents.

  • February 28 the CDC raise the situation of the Islamic Republic of Iran to level 3 and recommend travelers avoid nonessential travel to Iran.

  • March 11 President Trump bans all travel from Europe.

  • Currently the CDC recommends that all nonessential international travel be stopped.

From the United States to China and the Middle East Timeline

  • January 23 Wuhan is placed under quarantine, and Hubei follows shortly after.

  • March 4 hundreds of Chinese citizens in Iran are evacuated back to China.

  • March 12 Lebanon’s border with Syria is closed.

  • March 18 Israeli government announces only citizens and permanent residents can enter the country. All travelers subject to mandatory 14-day quarantine and health screening. The borders between Israel and Egypt and Jordan were closed.

  • March 19 United Arab Emirates (UAE) suspended the entry of valid visa holders who were outside of the country.

  • March 19 Rafic Hariri International Airport in Lebanon is closed.

  • March 25 Iran bans all internal travel.

  • March 25 all passenger and transit flights are suspended for two weeks in UAE.

  • March 27 China bans all foreign visitors.

  • April 1 all flights were suspended in Jordan, and the borders were closed to travelers. Anyone who arrived in Jordan March 16 are placed under 14-day quarantine in hotels in Amman and at the Dead Sea.

  • April 1 all international travel to Saudi Arabia is suspended. Anyone who visited China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macao, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Iraq, Italy or South Korea within 14 days is banned from entering the country.
